AAKAR, a name derived from the Sanskrit word meaning “shape,” represents the transformative power of artistry. Just like delicate clay can be molded into a beautifully crafted product by a passionate master, so too can cultural traditions be revived and celebrated through craftsmanship.
Ranjita Basumatary, the visionary founder of AAKAR, is a fashion designer and proud graduate of NIFT, New Delhi. Growing up in a Bodo community, one of Assam’s culturally rich tribes, she was surrounded by the beautiful tradition of weaving, an art practiced by nearly every Bodo household. This heritage inspired her passion for fashion design, instilling in her a commitment to bring value, innovation, and a touch of glamour to the age-old weaving practices of her community.
With a heartfelt mission, Ranjita dedicated herself to uplifting Bodo weavers and preserving the craft that shapes her roots. Through AAKAR, she has woven together the skills, stories, and artistry of Bodo women, providing them with training in traditional weaving and Sustainable Natural Dyeing techniques for cotton and Eri silk. Her efforts empower local artisans, especially women, to refine their craft and gain economic independence.
In 2012, Ranjita brought her dream to life with AAKAR, a brand that uniquely blends Bodo woven fabrics with hand-embroidery and other crafts to create sophisticated, culturally resonant pieces. Starting locally with kurtas sold informally, AAKAR quickly garnered attention, eventually leading to participation in national exhibitions. These events helped AAKAR build a distinctive identity, connecting with audiences beyond Assam and attracting admirers from all over India.
Today, with a growing demand for its unique products, AAKAR has expanded its reach through an online presence, allowing Ranjita’s vision and the remarkable artistry of the Bodo community to be celebrated globally. Through AAKAR, Ranjita continues her journey to honor her heritage, support sustainable livelihoods, and elevate Bodo weaving as a symbol of beauty and resilience.
